For Mickey

Friend, conspiracy theorist, spiritual messenger of sorts, master fix anything kind of guy. A prepared in all the details for the days ahead labeled “when the shit hits fan time” person. His friends were many and varied in their interests. His internment was full of laughter and tears. It was personal, human and more moving than any other such event I’ve ever been present for. His friends dug his grave by hand, another made his coffin which had a window so he could see out. He was clothed in his favorite bits of sartorial splendor. He was lowered into the earth by his friends. then as the grave was filled in by those present we heard stories about who he was to us. A hand carved granite slab at the ready.  Stories that surely brought tears from all but also roaring laughter as reflections were shared. I saw many of the pieces of ”art” I worked on with him.  Those mind snapshots of sitting at the table drinking tea or sharing a meal and designing each piece were flashing before me as I looked around the circle. People wearing a series of hats he had me add stuff to, each with their own stubby pencil clipped to the brim(always a Mickey detail). Knife sheaths and a walking staff carried by the receivers of these precious objects.  Tenderness flows over and around me still as I ponder life in this community and on this small island without his arm waving as he passed by en route to the next job or mission. His vehicle covered in various provocative slogans and stickers will be carrying someone else from now on.   Kind and generous in every way. You will be missed. There is a Bahai principle I was reminded of recently, “Death is the Messenger of Joy”. I think the laughter and tears together are this idea in action. He would like that.
